WOC in PT: Isabelle Degraff, SPT

Welcome! Today, for the Women of Color in Physical Therapy series, we are featuring Isabelle Degraff, SPT. Stephanie is a first-year physical therapy student at Florida International University in Miami. She graduated from the University of Central Florida with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science. Isabelle’s loving parents are of Haitian and Martinican descent, but she was born in New York and grew up in Florida. Isabelle loves adventure, traveling and physical therapy and she hopes to possibly start her own business one day! Without further ado, let’s meet Isabelle!

WOC in PT: Maatra Henderson, SPT

Welcome! Today, for the Women of Color in Physical Therapy series, we are featuring Maatra Henderson, SPT. Maatra is a first year physical therapy student at the University of St. Augustine in Texas. She received a bachelor's degree in Kinesiotherapy from the Norfolk State University, an HBCU in Norfolk, Virginia. Maatra’s ultimate goal is to research and expand on the integration of nutrition in physical therapy. This is an area of the field that has not been utilized to its full ability. Her hope is to both heal and influence other therapists to consider using nutrition as a tool to treat patients. Eventually, she plans to open her own private practice to offer patients the most holistic approach to meeting their therapeutic needs. Without further ado, let’s meet Maatra!

What moment made you decide to pursue physical therapy?

Why to NOT Rule Out Personal Training | My 3 month experience

Yup, you read that right. I did personal training for 3 months. The home workout advocate, former cross country runner and strength training skeptic did personal training. FOR 3 MONTHS. Ok, I’ll stop now, but if you know me well, this is sort of a big deal especially since I absolutely despised gym days when I used to run track. What changed, you may ask? Taking courses like Exercise Physiology and Exercise Metabolism in college completely changed my perspective on strength training and I slowly started adding in strength workouts here and there.
