WOC in PT: Ariel Johnson, SPT

WOC in PT: Ariel Johnson, SPT

Welcome! Today, for the Women of Color in Physical Therapy series, we are featuring Ariel Johnson, SPT. Ariel is a third year PT student at Alabama State University. She is dedicated to promoting the field of physical therapy to minorities. She believes that you can’t be what you can’t see, so hopefully being a role model to assist Pre-PT students will motivate other students of color. Without further ado, let’s meet Ariel!

What moment made you decide to pursue PT?

I decided to pursue PT in HS as a student athlete and my passion really exploded when I saw the impact I could make in an inpatient rehab setting.

Was there a certain challenge you had to overcome as a WOC in PT school and/or at a professional setting and how did you overcome it?

One challenge as a WOC in PT is feeling comfortable in your skin and hair as a minority in our field. It’s never fun to feel like you can’t relate to those around you so I created a platform to create awareness and educate other PTs so we can all be culturally aware.

What advice would you give a fellow WOC trying to break into the PT profession?

Advice to a fellow WOC interest in PT is never sell yourself short. I started to doubt myself during my journey and if I gave up then I wouldn’t be pursing my passion now.

What woman/women do you you draw inspiration from?

My PT mentors are some of the women that I draw inspiration from, they are managers and directors in our profession.

In addition to being awesome, what do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time I love anything that has to do with natural hair. You could set me loose in a hair store for hours just reading product labels!

For the new readers, where can we find you on social media?

You can find me on my up and coming IG page @thePTbae or at my YouTube link: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQhmNJR4k0PzniebmHK64Fw?

Thank you so much to Ariel for sharing her experience being a woman of color in physical therapy! Be sure to follow her at the social media link posted above. :)

If you are a woman of color involved in the physical therapy world, whether you are just starting as a pre-PT or a practicing PT, I would love to feature you in my WOC in PT series!
